Frontside Grind Is Back!

Do you wake up thinking......coffee, coffee, coffe....climbing, climbing, climbing?

Well, so do we and the awesome folks at Frontside Grind and the American Alpine Club get that too! The Frontside Grind (FSG) will back at the Mount Washington Valley Ice Fest for all you folks that love a REALLY good cup o' joe! Austin and Laura are the awesome owners of Frontside Grind and they gather beans beans from around the world and roast them to perfection. In fact they have so much love for the Ice Fest folks that Austin roasts a special blend each year for our event! This year the Dropline Blend will be at the AAC table. But really, Frontside Grind's coffee is incredible and roasted by such good folks. We are so excited they're joining the 2012 MWV Ice Fest again. Outdoor Research: Designed By Adventure

When Outdoor Research was founded back in the 80's they started as a company that made gaiters. Since then, because of people who are constantly pushing the limits of outdoor sports, they have developed into one of the more innovative outdoor apparel companies out there. The Alpine Alibi II has a new leather palm (Pittards® Armortan®) which also allows for just the right amount for grip, even when wet, for precise tool handling.

Remember back in November when we announced that Sterling Rope is bringing Will Gadd to the 2012 Ice Fest!? Well, we're still totally psyched! He's going to be speaking on Friday, February 3rd at 7:30 p.m. This guy re-defined the sport of ice and mixed climbing! He's been traveling around the world on all kinds of adventures, and he's going to be here this year to share them with YOU! We'll definitely be hearing about the crazy stuff he's been doing in British Columbia's Helmcken Falls and probably the adventures he's had in Norway and Sweden!

Howdy Folks! We're super psyched to announce that Mountain Hardware athlete Janet Bergman is going to be joining us again this year as a guest guide at Ice Fest! She'll be hanging with us all weekend and definitely guiding the Newbie Ice Climbing clinic on Friday. This clinic is for those of you who're brand new to the climbing scene! There is no better person than Janet to be teaching this clinic too. Her passion for climbing comes through in her ability to confidently introduce new people to climbing. She'll break it down for you and impart the skills and knowledge you'll need to take your own climbing to the next level!

Janet also climbs for Sterling Rope and La Sportiva! She spent the majority of this past summer in India in the Karakorum Mountains with Guest Guide Emilie Drinkwater and Kirsten Kramer. While there they did some pretty rad climbing and got to experience all that the Indian culture had to offer! Janet excels at all different types of climbing. She loves those long alpine rock climbs but also plays around on boulders and enjoys putting up new routes. She's been all over the world and has more years experience than we have fingers (at least one of us anyway). We're excited she'll be with us again this year!

Guest guide Silas Rossi: Internationally Certified AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide & is an AIARE Level I avalanche educator.

We just got a ton of snow last night, and if you're thinking you need to hone in on your avi skills you should come do it doing the Ice Fest! It is a 3 day course that will be taught by one of our amazing guest guides, Silas Rossi.

Silas is originally from Maine, and has a strong passion for the White Mountains here in New Hampshire. He recently became an Internationally Certified AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide and is an AIARE Level I avalanche educator. He, in our humble opinion, is one the best at teaching the AIARE Level I course. Silas has skied and climbed all over the mountains here in New England, but also in Wyoming, British Columbia, and Europe! If your going to be spending some time in the mountains this year, and in the years to come it is essential to educate yourself properly on avalanche hazard management. We strongly recommend this course, and with this guest guide. You won't regret it!

Now the AIARE Level I avalanche course is a 3 day course that will:

Provide a basic understanding of avalanches.
Describe a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain.
Focus on identifying the right questions, rather than on providing “answers.”
Give lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the field.

At the end of the Level One course the student should be able to:

Plan and prepare for travel in avalanche terrain.
Recognize avalanche terrain.
Describe a basic framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain.
Learn and apply effective companion rescue.

We sent Jim Shimberg an e-mail asking him to send us some pictures of him ice climbing, and when he replied he sent us about 10 pictures that were all photos of him with his family, friends, or clients. This really sums up Jim in a nutshell, and made us all smile real big. We love this guy!

So as you can imagine we are really excited to welcome back Jim Shimberg to the Mount Washington Valley Ice Fest! We can't lie, Jim is one of our favorites, and we couldn't be happier that he'll be with us again this year! He is by far one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. This makes him even better as a guide. Shim (as his friends call him) has been at it for the past 22 years! He's been all over the world and has his name all over guidebooks for both rock and ice across New England. He's a legend in these parts for both his rock and ice skills, but also for just being one of the most wonderful people in the universe. Did you know Shim made the first free ascent of the grade 6 ice climb 'Call of the Wild' at Lake Willoughby Vermont in 1995? This was the first grade 6 ice climb in New England!

We're totally excited to be welcoming Mountain Hardware athlete Kevin Mahoney back to the Guest Guide pool this year! Kevin is one of the most prolific climbers in the Mount Washington Valley, an awesome guy and a great guide! Kevin grew up in the area and has since taken his climbing all over the world. Kevin has authored many first ascents including climbs all over New Hampshire, Alaska, Ecuador and France! Not only is he a great climber, but he's an amazing educator. Kevin taught as a NOLS instructor for six years. His experience as a teacher combined with that of being a guide allows him the opportunity to help his clients actually learn how to be competent in the mountains while having exciting adventures at the same time!

This year Kevin will be guiding both Friday and Saturday. He's definitely guy you want to be out there will. Both of his clinics are for the folks who are ready to get on that steeper stuff out there. He'll help you take your steep ice climbing skills to the next level. Great news, Folks! The NEice Soup Kitchen will be back at Ice Fest on Saturday afternoon! These guys are super awesome and they make real good soup. There will be soup upstairs at IME in the afternoon and in year's past they've even gone around to our clinics to serve you soup when you're coldest!

NEice was the brainchild of Doug Millen who started the organization back in 1999. He felt frustrated by the lack of information on ice climbing in New England and decided to do something about it. It has since grown to be the #1 resource for climbers in the Northeast. There is a great community on the site and a wealth of information, including descriptions and photos about conditions and beta on new and classic lines.

The folks over there are super supportive of Ice Fest and anything that has to do with climbing in the North East! We're really happy to have them back again this year! New to Ice Fest's Guest Guide roster this year is Andrea Charest! She's joining us from Bolton, Vermont where she guides for and manages Petra Cliffs! This lady tears it up on the ice and snow. She loves teaching folks how to ice climb and takes pride in imparting knowledge and experience people will carry with them for the rest of their lives! She's got a smile that will keep you warm on those cold days out there and the skills to teach you everything you need to know!

Andrea is an AMGA certified Single Pitch Instructor and recently completed the Rock Instructor Course in North Conway. Her future plans include pursuing further AMGA guide training! She enjoys living central to all of the wonderful things New England and New York have to offer those of us who live to be outdoors! She can often be found hanging off of cliffs and flying down the slopes all over Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. She's traveled all over chasing big mountains with lots of snow. She recently told us that if she ever breaks up with Vermont she's moving to Valdez, Alaska. We're totally psyched that she'll be joining us this year!

We are so happy to announce that Majka Burhardt is back again this year! She wasn't able to make it last year and we missed her! Majka is a Patagonia Ambassador and has been an outdoors woman for the majority of her life. We have one more guest guide to add to the roster! Matt Shove is coming back to guide at the 2012 Ice Fest. He joined us for last years Ice Fest, and he is the man when it comes to learning how to climb ice. He likes to break it down so you learn the fundamentals and mechanics before you strike out onto the classic routes. He likes to make sure you can cruise through moderate terrain, so when you get to the hard stuff, you've got plenty of juice to left to punch it. He figured this was pretty important after spending 2 winters as the caretaker of the Harvard Cabin, climbing on the moderate alpine terrain of Mt. Washington. Psyched to have you back Matt!

Matt is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Instructor, and is a full provider for the AMGA SPI Course and Exam as well as the AMGA CWI Program. He served as Technical Editor for the 2nd edition of Dave Fasulo’s acclaimed Climbing Self Rescue, published in June 2011. Matt also runs a climbing training program for the US Coast Guard. Well, gosh we seem so excited every time we post because, well, we are darn it!!!!

We are so thrilled that North Conway's own Freddie Wilkinson will be back at the 2012 MWV Ice Fest. Freddie is a Mountain Hardwear, Sterling Rope, La Sportiva, & Julbo athlete. He will be guiding during the weekend, AND he will be MC-ing Friday evening's festivities! Freddie is an incredible person for a few reasons, but one of our favorites is how much heart he pours into his hometown's ice fest. He is constantly brainstorming new ideas, formats, and visions to help us make the Ice Fest a little better each year. He is signed up to guide during the MWV Ice Fest on Saturday and Sunday, and he will be our MC on Friday night during the Face Off Comp. Have you seen Freddie MC? He is hilarious, so full of energy, and gives nonstop play by play action during the comp! In a nutshell this guy has a whole lot of heart for the northeast climbing community, and the place he calls home.

Announcing The AAC Northeast–MWV Ice Festival LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant!

We’re thrilled to announce the beneficiary of this year’s silent auction: a brand spankin’ new grant program for New England and New York climbers! And this ain’t your typical only-for-the-elite grant program either… This is a grant for all of us—for New Englanders and New Yorkers who want to live their climbing dreams, whatever they may be.

The MWV Ice Fest is partnering with the American Alpine Club to help them roll out their new grant program for northeastern climbers called the LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant. Here at the Ice Fest we're always brainstorming how to make things a little better, and how to keep inspiring the Northeast climbing community! We were so excited to learn that the AAC Northeast had the same goals for the climbing community, so we partnered up!

All of the proceeds from the Ice Fest silent auction held on Saturday evening at the Cranmore Climbing Wall before and during the Ice Fest Film Fest will directly fund the 2012 winter cycle of the program: the AAC Northeast–Mt. Washington Valley Ice Festival LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant. More details about the program are below. Applications for the Mt. Washington Valley Ice Festival grant will be released at Ice Fest and will fund climbing projects for the 2012–2013 winter season.

We’ll have more information about this exciting new opportunity at the 2012 Ice Fest. We’ll also post announcements about the grant here on our blog and on the American Alpine Club website.

While we’re on the subject, have you joined the American Alpine Club? In addition to loads of fantastic member benefits, the AAC is an important and active supporter of the New England climbing community. Just in the past few months, a crew of AAC volunteers rallied to clean graffiti off the top of Cathedral Ledge and the AAC Cornerstone Conservation grant helped CRAG-VT rebuild access to Bolton Quarry after flood damage.

About the AAC Northeast LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant, supported by the Mt. Washington Valley Ice Festival:

This is a new, locally administered grant for climbers residing in New England and New York. The purpose of the LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant is to fund individuals or small teams in pursuit of their personal climbing dreams. The emphasis of the grant is on projects that have significant positive impact on grantees’ progressions as climbers, as opposed to cutting-edge or exploratory international objectives (for climbers with these objectives, please see the Lyman Spitzer Cutting Edge, the McNeill-Nott, and Copp-Dash Inspire Awards).

Examples of types of projects we might fund include (but are not limited to):

a Northeast climber’s first trip to Yosemite to climb a big wall travel for a boulderer or sport climber to visit an area outside of the Northeast and attempt an iconic problem/route

a Northeast ice climber who wants to expand their experience in the Canadian Rockies or elsewhere

a rock climber who wants to learn winter mountaineering skills in New Hampshire, the Cascades, or Alaska

The LIVE YOUR DREAM Grant is supported by the American Alpine Club and local fundraising efforts and is administered by a panel of New England and New York climbers, chaired by AAC Northeast Regional Coordinator Sarah Garlick.

We will hold two grant rounds per year, each giving away at least $2,000 to two or more grantees. We will release the official grant announcement and application Feb. 1, 2012.

Applications for the first round (summer objectives) will be due April 15, 2012. Applications for the second round (winter objectives) will be due September 15, 2012. Grant winners will be announced 2–4 weeks after each application period ends.

The Mount Washington Valley Ice Fest can't express how excited we are to feed back into the climbing community on a local scale. We can't express how excited we are to be partnering with the American Alpine Club Northeast to make it all possible. We encourage all levels of winter climbers to dream big and apply, and get after it. We can't wait to report at the 2013 MWV Ice Fest about the trips that were awarded and the details of the trips from the climbers themselves.

1. A select few professionals are receiving invitations to compete. We hope to see you!

2. For those who have not received an invitation and wish to apply to compete in the Face Off Comp you must send an e-mail to mwvicefest@gmail.com, and ask for the Ice Fest Competitor Qualifier Application. Fill it out and send back to mwvicefest@gmail.com.

Howdy Folks! Ever wonder what it takes to be a hardman? Take a clinic with Outdoor Research and Sterling Rope Athlete Bayard Russell and you'll find out! He's one of New England's most bad ass climbers and is based right here in North Conway. In climbing with Bayard when the going gets tough, he goes harder! Good afternoon!! As the weather starts to get colder and winter bears down, you’re probably starting to think about new pieces of gear to purchase for yourself! We’ve asked Outdoor Research Ambassador Athlete and Ice Fest guest guide Emilie Drinkwater what her favorite piece of winter clothing is. Emilie rocks the winter with ice climbing and skiing and needs clothes that are going hold up and keep her warm in the coldest temps. She couldn’t pick just one article and so has sent us two to share with you!

Emilie highly recommends the Stormtracker Glove. She says they are “amazing, dexterous gloves that are simply designed with leather palms and Windstopper. These are the only thing I will wear for steep ice!” We couldn’t agree with her more! These gloves are super low profile and are equally at home in the alpine, on the slopes and on steep ice! Hey Ice Festers! We’re really excited to offer you a totally new clinic during ice fest this year! IMCS guide and Snow Kite wiz kid Zeb Jakub will be teaching Intro to Snow Kiting! Here you’ll learn the basics of what it takes to partake in this exciting new winter sport. Snow Kiting started back in the 60’s and has since been perfected with its growing popularity. Similar to kite surfing, people use kite power to propel themselves across frozen lakes or snow covered fields wearing skis or snowboards instead of the surfboard. The sport is becoming more diverse as participants use kites to travel greater distances and enthusiasts start to pus the boundaries of freestyle, big air, speed and back country exportation.

The Snow Kiting Clinic is being offered on both Friday and Saturday of Ice Fest. Two three hour courses will be offered each day running from 9-12 and 1-4!! Hey Folks! We’ve been chatting with our friends over at Petzl to get an idea of what they’ll be bringing to the Ice Fest demo table this year! They’ve always been a leader in the ice climbing world and this year they’ll have two exciting new products for you to try out along with the rest of their ice climbing line.

New this year is the Lynx Crampon. This crampon is for the climber who does it all. It is extremely versatile and performs well on steep ice, snow couloirs and on mixed terrain. The modular front points allow you to fit the crampon to your specific needs including dual or mono-points, long or short and/or asymmetrical. These crampons also come with interchangeable front bindings which means you don’t have to have boots with toe welts in order to use them. 

One gear critic had this to say about the Lynx: “Petzl used some innovative engineerin here to make one pair of Lynx fix a majority of boots commercially available. And trust me, just being able to fit 50% of the boots available is a major accomplishment. With the Lynx, I think Petzl will be well past the 50% grade. Not sure any recently manufactured crampon can claim anything remotely similar." These are great crampons but don't take our word for it! Demo a pair at Ice Fest this year and see how good they are for yourself!

Also available to demo to this year is the newly designed Nomic ice tool. The Nomic was made for both ice climbing and dry tooling, another all arounder that performs well on both! As they say on the website, the Nomic allows the rock climbing repertoire to be transferred to ice. These tools have an ergonomic handle that is adjustable to fit your needs. The ice pick allows for easy penetration into any type of ice and comes out easily. It can also be equipped with two removable pick weights to balance and propel the axe. Lastly you can put a hammer on it for ease in placing pitons while climbing! Whether you’re just learning to ice/mixed climb or you’ve been at it for 25 years this tool does it all so be sure to stop by the Petzl table and give them a try!

Emilie is back on board guiding again this year and we couldn’t be happier. She just got home (to the Adirondacks of Keene, NY) from an extremely successful expedition to India with fellow Ice Fest guides Janet Bergman and Freddie Wilkinson! Between the three of them they got five first ascents!! Emilie is an Outdoor Research athlete and she is also one of the nicest people you’ll meet and she does it all! She grew up in New Hampshire ski racing and was introduced to rock and ice climbing when she was in college. She crushes! Along with climbing and skiing well, she's an excellent educator. Which is why we've got her teaching some of our women’s specific courses so keep your eyes peeled for more details down the road ladies!

We try to make things a little better each year, and last year we brought in the talented Mon Voyage Neon to spin some killer tunes during Friday & Saturday evenings festivities at the Cranmore Climbing Wall. Not only is this guy a killer ice and mixed climber, but he mixes the tunes for climbing comps all over the country! We were blown away with how much he rocked it during the 2011 Ice Fest, and thus, we're bringing him back for the 2012 Ice Fest! A lot of you may have seen him most recently in the Reel Rock Film Tour where he was exploding 30 foot icicle bombs and sending the hardest pure ice climb in the world. Now this larger than life guy is coming to the 2012 Ice Fest to talk in person about his crazy ice climbing adventures in British Columbia's spectacular Helmcken Falls. Additionally he will also touch on his other climbing experiences that may include climbing icebergs off the coast of Labrador, underground mines in Sweden, and fjords in Norway. Yes, this guy is rad.

Additionally, the same evening he'll be psyching up all the Face Off Competitors! It'll be a blast to have this guy in the house while our guest guides, athletes, and local New England hardmen give it their all! It will be a must see!

This years Ice Fest was a huge success- but it was so because SO many helped MAKE it happen. Where do we even begin?

First, we want to thank all of YOU! All of you who have a passion for ice climbing, IME/IMCS, the MWV Ice Fest and having a gosh darn good time! So thank you to ALL of the participants who took clinics, for ALL of you who checked out the demo's, for ALL who bid on the Mountain Rescue Service Autcion which help them raise $2,000+, and ALL of you who came to the evening festivities at the Cranmore Climbing Wall on Friday & Saturday nights! We do it for the climbing community whether you come from near or far- we hope you had a blast.....that is our ultimate goal!

We gave special recognition to Doug Madara this year as he probably put in 35+ hours throughout the ice fest. In addition we want to thank Josh Hurst and Jim Ewing who set the comp routes for the Ice Fest Face Off Competition. Josh drove all the way down from Bar Harbor Maine to help set our best comp routes to date and Jim from Falmouth, Maine. Other people who we want to thank personally for their time are the AAC volunteers, Friends of Tuckerman Ravine volunteers, Nickie Sekera, Sara Thibault, Rufus Lusk, Freddie Wilkinson, Tim Keenan, and Bayard Russell who all donated time to help make this event so incredible. Also, those who helped move the ladder during the comp, Jim Shimberg for belaying during the comp, and anyone else that helped in some way or form. We heart you.

Of course we want to thank all the IMCS guides and our guest guides as well. We were just blown away by the top caliber guides we had for the 2011 Ice Fest. Our guest guides this year included Janet Bergman, Emilie Drinkwater, Matt McCormick, Kevin Mahoney, Silas Rossi, Bayard Russell, Matt Shove, Mark Synnott, and Nick Yardley.

Next we want to thank our two IMCS interns Megan Flynn and Chris Foehly. These two BUSTED their butts throughout the weekend.

And of course, our assistant event planner Ashley Link was undeniably incredible. Plain and simple- whatever it was she got it DONE. To us, she was an angel from the heavens!

Freddie Wilkinson was our amazing MC that has the place intrigued and laughing! Thank you Freddie! In addition Freddie chopped down the log off his own property that was the killer crux of the Friday evening Face Off Comp!

Big thanks to all Ice Fest Face Off Competitors that came from near and far! We even had some Italians and the Vermont kids sent BIG including Josh Worely who was the only one to send the comp route (dressed as a hippie mind you)! Our own Janet Bergman gracefully danced up the women's route almost to the top! It was a gripping crowd pleaser.

Mon Voyage Neon rocked the house Friday night for the Face Off Competition and then on Saturday night for the AAC All American Dance Party! Woot-woot!

Dave Kelly (& Sasha Eisele) who really helped keep the IMCS office and clinics in order during registration- a daunting and challenging task as we had 120 clients go out on Saturday!

Finally, we want to thank Rick Wilcox and Brad White who trusted us with the amount of time we put in, our visions, and our requests of them. Emilie Drinkwater will be one of many guest guides at the 2011 Ice Fest. Emilie is an Outdoor Research athlete, amazing climber, teacher, and person. Emilie is an ice and rock climbing guide based out of the Adirondacks. She has been a guide since 2000, and is an AMGA Certified Rock Instructor, AMGA Single Pitch Instructor, recently completed the AMGA Ski Guide Course and Aspirant Rock Guide course/exam. We are super psyched to announce that Earthtec has joined the 2011 Ice Fest. This is Earthtec's first year with the Mount Washington Valley Ice Fest, and we want make sure you know what this cool company is about.
